What is IVF treatment?
IVF is an acronym for in vitro fertilization. This is one of the most used and successful Assisted reproductive technologies or treatment. IVF is done by using a combination of medical and surgical procedures to help sperm fertilize an egg, and help the fertilized egg implant in a woman’s uterus.
Along with PCOS, IVF treatment can be a boon for people suffering from other medical conditions like:
- Fallopian tubes Blocked or damaged
- Male factor infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility
- Women who have had their fallopian tubes removed
- Couples suffering from a genetic disorder
- Unexplained infertility
IVF treatment Procedure
Injections are provided for women from day two of the Menstrual cycle. Once she receives injections she can produce the eggs over a period of 8 to 10 days this process is called ovarian stimulation.
Once the eggs are released it is collected through a procedure called Oocyte pick up. It is usually done under general anesthesia. Once the oocytes are retrieved the sperm from the male partner will be used to fertilize those eggs. The eggs will be grown over a period of 3 to 5 days till it reaches the stage called Blastocysts.
Generally, in the case of Polycystic ovaries, doctors prefer not to transfer the embryos in the same cycle since there will be more number of eggs for the women who are having PCOS. Hence doctors will freeze the embryos and transfer it in the next cycle. By doing this there will be a great chance for pregnancy.
