The idea of surrogacy has been known for long with the procedure becoming legal under the provisions of the. “Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2020.”
Even widows and divorced females would now be able to become parents thanks to surrogacy. However, the age old notion of a fertile woman with healthy eggs being fertilized by a donor sperm or the sperm of the male partner is not the only way to bring a child into the world today.
Instead, it is gestational surrogacy that has begun to look more attractive of late. The idea is to utilize an egg from the female partner and fertilize it with the healthy sperm of the prospective father thus creating an embryo that contains genetic material from both sets of parents.
The surrogate is imply the carrier here and is not biologically linked to the couple.
The couple plagued with infertility finds this method to be advantageous as the surrogate mother has no claims over the child either biologically or legally. The entire process is carried out outside the body worth the egg and sperm mixed together under carefully controlled conditions within a laboratory.
However, the fertility expert may decide to use donor eggs when the oocyte of the patient is below the desired quality. Likewise for sperms too! The latter options do not have the baby being born with matching DNA.
Who Can Opt For Gestational Surrogacy?
The surrogate mother has to meet certain regulations in order to be declared fit for surrogacy. The doctors recommend opting for a young female between 21 and 45 years of age who is fertile and enjoys a good general health.
The carrier also needs to have at least one healthy biological child having carried the baby to full term without any complications. There is a limit on the number of natural pregnancies as well as C-Sections undertaken by the patient though.
The fertility doctor would speak to the surrogate mother at length and explain the procedure fully so that the individual understands her role perfectly.
Recommended Medical Tests for the Gestational Carrier
The surrogate mother would have to have her medical history checked and would have to undergo a physical examination by an experienced medical professional. She will also be tested for sexually transmitted disease such as HIV, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
Presence of hepatitis, Chlamydia, and cytomegalovirus will be checked too. Psychological counseling for the prospective parents as well as the Gestational Carrier is advised to eliminate stress and anxiety issues.
Gestational Surrogacy: The Procedure
The process begins by retrieving a healthy egg from the female patient or a donor and adding it to a petri dish. Healthy sperms are obtained from the male partner or a donor and prepared meticulously for fertilization. The mixture containing egg and sperms are then transferred into an incubator where fertilization takes place in optimum conditions.
The resulting embryos are checked for quality and transferred into the uterus of the gestational carrier who has also been prepared to receive the embryo or blastocyst if required.
The embryo implants itself to the lining of the uterus and the rest of the procedure mimics a normal pregnancy. The baby is delivered by C-Section under supervision of a doctor well experienced in handling ART procedures.
