Four types of endometriosis are found by what area of the pelvis or abdomen it affects. These include-
- Superficial peritoneal endometriosis
The peritoneum is a thin membrane that lines the abdomen and pelvis and superficial peritoneal endometriosis attaches to the peritoneum. It is the least severe form.
- Endometriomas
These are dark, fluid-filled cysts. They are also called chocolate cysts due to their color and size and are most common in the ovaries
- Deeply infiltrating endometriosis (DIE)
In this type, the endometrial tissue invades the organs either within or outside the pelvic cavity. This can include ovaries, rectum, bladder and bowels.
- Abdominal wall endometriosis
In this type of endometriosis, the endometrial tissue can grow on the abdominal wall.
