This is the journey of oocyte and sperm to become a blastocyst. Oocytes are exposed to sperm in the laboratory so that fertilization can occur in IVF or through ICSI wherein a single sperm is injected directly into a Single oocyte
Fertilization is not simply the entry of a sperm cell into an egg cell and doesn’t happen instantaneously rather sperm and oocyte unite over the course of 4–6 hours.
The presence of two round bodies in the egg’s center is the first sign of fertilization.
After fertilization, cell division begins. Embryos in the first few days of development are referred as “cleavage,” stage embryos, because cells are repeatedly dividing. Classically, the cleavage stage lasts until “Day 3”
Day 5 or Blastocyst stage is the final phase of zygote development. The outer ring provides the tissues needed for a successful pregnancy inside this protective outer ring lies the group of cells that will eventually develop into a baby.
We at KIC prefer Blastocyst transfer as these have more chances of successful pregnancy.
