Azoospermia is the medical term used when there are no sperm in the ejaculate. Azoospermia can be ‘obstructive’ which means that the route between the production site of sperm (testes) and ejaculation is blocked.
In some cases, the cause of blockage can be known, e.g. a previous vasectomy or a failed reverse vasectomy. There may be non-obstructive type of azoospermia that may happen due to absence of testicles, inability of testicles to produce sperm or testicles unable to produce mature sperm.
The infertility treatment provided by fertility experts of Kiran Infertility Centre – Bengaluru in case of obstructive azoospermia involves surgically harvesting sperm from the epididymis (PESA) or testes (TESA) and then use the sperm to induce fertilization in the laboratory with ICSI. If there is no visible impediment, a Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) may be performed as procedure to see if sperm is being generated.
